Stopping the cargo criminals

This year has seen a major push for improvements in cargo safety. Here, we report on two initiatives from the International Union of Marine Insurance to reduce the risk of fires and also of theft

This year has already seen an alarming number of containership fires, including Yantian Express, APL Vancouver, Grande America, E R Kobe and KMTC Hongkong. The escalation is of growing concern to the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) which used a recent forum to call for an urgent improvement to onboard fire-fighting systems.
