DIOCESE OF ROCHESTER SUES INSURERS OVER ABUSE CLAIMS
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, New York has sued more than a dozen insurers on allegations they breached contracts by backing away from sexual abuse claims filed by parishioners under the state’s recently passed Child Victims Act. The CVA allows abuse victims to file claims up to their 55th birthday rather than the usual 23rd birthday and gives them a year to do so. In the filing in state bankruptcy court, the diocese said the insurers “have advanced similar reservations with respect to the availability of coverage” under liability policies. The diocese may face up to $100m in damages with the new claims.
