LLOYD’S REOPENING TARGETED BY CLIMATE PROTESTS
The reopening of Lloyd’s London offices and underwriting floor has been targeted by climate change protests. The protest is part of a UK-wide day of action to mark the reopening of Lloyd’s offices after the lockdown, according to Coal Action Network. Protesters gathered at Lloyd’s One Lime Street headquarters and 12 other cities to demand Lloyd’s insurers stop covering “all coal mines immediately”. In particular, the Coal Action Network is calling on Lloyd’s to rule out insuring the proposed West Cumbria coal mine, the first deep coal mine planned in the UK for over 30 years. In recent months, Lloyd’s has come under increasing pressure to cease insuring fossil fuel risks, including the controversial Adani Carmichael thermal coal mine in Australia. Last month, Extinction Rebellion protesters dumped a truck load of fake coal outside the Lloyd’s of London HQ.
