RMS ADDS WESTERN NORTH PACIFIC TO NORTH HEMISPHERE CYCLONE REPORT

US catastrophe modeler Risk Management Solutions has expanded its annual tropical cyclone outlook report to include forecasts for Western Pacific basin activity. RMS said the majority of forecasts for the region call for a near-average number of tropical storms and typhoons. Tropical Storm Risk’s forecast calls for 24 tropical storms and 15 typhoons while the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts expects 18-25 tropical storms and 10-15 typhoons. The 1991-2020 averages for tropical storms and typhoon were 25.1 and 13.3, respectively. For the North Atlantic hurricane season, the RMS report said most forecasts call for above-average activity. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration expects the season to produce 13-20 named storms, of which 6-10 will become hurricanes and 3-5 will become major hurricanes. Colorado State University’s forecasting team expects 15-21 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes and 2-6 major storms. The averages for 1995-2020 were 15.5 named storms, 7.7 hurricanes and 3.5 major hurricanes.
