7.1 Outline of the Czech Republic’s legal environment

7.1.1 Constitutional structure

The Czech Republic has been a liberal democracy since 1989, when the communist regime was peacefully replaced during the so-called “Velvet Revolution”. After the break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1993 into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the Czech Republic is a fully sovereign state and has been a member of the European Union since 2004.
