3 CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES 3.1 INTRODUCTION The importance of Classification Societies to the shipping industry is well illustrated by the role they play in the sale and purchase of second-hand ships. Most buyers will rely upon the accuracy of the ship’s classification records and upon the certificate typically provided at delivery confirming that the ship is in class, free from conditions or recommendations imposed by the ship’s Classification Society.
