Hague Rules time limit - Whether extension for bringing suit granted by shipowners

The plaintiff cargo owners sued the defendant shipowners under a bill of lading in respect of damage caused to 915 bags of sugar. The vessel was on charter at the relevant time and the bill of lading was issued on the standard liner bill of lading form of HWGS, an associated company of the charterers. It was signed by the master and incorporated the Hague Rules. The bill of lading also contained an identity of carrier clause which stated that the contract was between the merchant and the shipowner.
