Hague Rules time limit - Whether extension for bringing suit granted by shipowners
The plaintiff cargo owners sued the defendant shipowners under a bill of lading in respect of damage caused to 915 bags of
sugar. The vessel was on charter at the relevant time and the bill of lading was issued on the standard liner bill of lading
form of HWGS, an associated company of the charterers. It was signed by the master and incorporated the Hague Rules. The bill
of lading also contained an identity of carrier clause which stated that the contract was between the merchant and the shipowner.
