Spiliada Maritime Corporation v. Cansulex Ltd. (The Spiliada) - House of Lords (Lord Keith, Lord Templeman, Lord Griffiths, Lord Mackay and Lord Goff) - 19 November 1986

House of Lords clarifies principles applicable to “forum non conveniens”

The vessel Spiliada was owned by a Liberian corporation and managed in Greece. She was voyage chartered to Minerals & Metals Trading Corporation of India Ltd. M.M.T.C.) for the carriage of sulphur from Vancouver to Indian ports. The sulphur had been sold to M.M.T.C. f.o.b. by Cansulex, a Canadian company. Cansulex were named as shippers in the bills of lading, which provided that English law should apply.
