The price of not using a solicitor
Agassi v Robinson (Inspector of Taxes) [2005] EWCA Civ 1507; NLJ 9 December
Andre Agassi in his successful battle with the taxman (who is seeking permission to appeal to the House of Lords) retained
a tax expert who is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation licensed to instruct counsel directly. No solicitors were
involved. The Revenue contended that Mr Agassi was not entitled to recover between the parties, costs he incurred in retaining
the tax expert. The matters in issue were so important that the Law Society was granted permission to intervene.
