ITALIAN WATCHDOG SAYS MORE COMPETITION NEEDED IN MOTOR

More competition is needed in the Italian motor insurance sector, according to Giuseppe Tesauro, head of Italian competition watchdog Antitrust. He claimed that this would bring down premiums to levels in other European countries. Mr Tesauro also claimed that introducing a practice of setting tariffs according to driver history rather than the type of vehicle and giving a larger role to brokers would help lower premiums. Alfonso Desiata, President of the Italian association of insurers ANIA, said that Antitrust should restrict itself to being the auditor of the market rather than its manager.
