Insurance – Subrogation – Damage caused to detention centre by rioting detainees – Whether operators of detention centre and their insurers entitled to recover compensation from the local police authority – Riot (Damages) Act 1886

The Riot (Damages) Act 1886 has no application to damage caused by the inmates of a contracted-out detention centre operated by private companies to the detention centre itself. Accordingly, the police are not required to provide compensation to the operators of the detention centre.
