Charterers’ P&I Cover

A. GENERALLY

25.1 In addition to the usual risks insured for the benefit of members who are shipowners, the mutual clubs also insure charterers, in competition with specialist charterers’ insurers. Entry is almost always on the basis of a fixed premium rather than the usual mutual underwriting system. The most likely type of charterer seeking P&I coverage will be time charterers but the clubs will also consider covering so-called “space” and “slot” charterers. Each charterer’s entry is rated separately according to the type of vessel, type of charterparty and the types of cargo that are likely to be carried.
