£117,000 settlement for mesothelioma
A pensioner who developed mesothelioma because he was exposed to asbestos during his work as a plumber has received £117,000
in an out-of-court settlement. He was exposed to the asbestos during a job in the mid-1950, when he had to remove an old heating
system and installed a new one. This involved repairing heating and steam pipes, which were lagged with asbestos. He would
use a hammer to break away sections of the lagging to access leaking or corroded pipes. Once the repair was completed, the
plumber would re-lag the pipe by mixing brown cement and asbestos-based powder with water and apply the mix to the pipe by
hand.
