Under the relevant Tennessee law, an unmarried mother has the sole right to choose her child’s first name. The child’s last name must be her last name, her maiden name or a combination of the two surnames. If the father signs a sworn acknowledgement of his paternity, then the unmarried mother may give her child the father’s surname.
