How shipping deals with quarantine in the modern age – practical aspects

The first recorded incidence of quarantine in relation to shipping dates back to 1374 where ships were prevented from entering Venice in order to protect the city from the plague. Ships were held for 40 days (“quaranta giorni”, later “quarantine”) to ensure they did not carry the disease.
