Although the P&I world is sometimes characterised as being conservative and slow to adapt to change, clubs’ prime position in providing liability cover to shipowners is dependent entirely on the continued support of shipowners. This support is contingent on clubs finding solutions to the new liabilities on the horizon. A good example is the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which has extended the financial security requirements of the International Group clubs and comes into force in January 2017.
