BOOK REVIEW - BRAEKHUS & REIN’S HANDBOOK ON P. & I. INSURANCE (3RD EDITION)
Braekhus & Rein’s HANDBOOK ON P. & I. INSURANCE (3rd Edition) by Jeremy Kingsley. Assuranceforeningen Gard, Arendal (1988, xxvii and 422 pp., plus 30 pp. Appendices and 16 pp. Index). Hardback £45.
STATUTES AND RULES (includes the 1989 Supplement to the Handbook on P. & I. Insurance). Gard, Arendal (1989, xii and 146 pp.). Paperback.
The primary function of Jeremy Kingsley’s elegant third edition of the Gard P. & I. Club’s Handbook is to set out the text of the statutes and the rules of the Gard and to provide a commentary upon them with particular reference to the legal background against which they have been developed. The explanatory comments are clearly written and legal issues are dealt with in a straightforward manner which will find favour with the many users of the book who have no special legal training, and the layout is a pleasing example of the David Pearce style, with pretty marginal illustrations lending colour to generously-spaced type. It is indeed a commendable demonstration of the care and skill with which a modern P. & I. Club will seek to inform and to assist the shipowners and charterers who make up its membership.
