In 1993 New Zealand enacted a comprehensive package of new legislation on company law and related topics, including the Companies Act 1993, which introduces a radically new companies regime. Among these measures is the Takeovers Act 1993, which received the Royal Assent on 28 September 1993 and is to come into force on 1 July 1994. This Act establishes a Takeovers Panel, broadly on the lines of the City Panel in London, but with rather more specific statutory backing and with the power to make rules which, once approved by Order in Council, will have the force of law.
