Few English lawyers will be unaware of the existence of the EEC Convention on Jurisdiction and the Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters, which has been given the force of law in the United Kingdom by the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1982. Given its continental origins, the Convention is an instrument from which English lawyers can derive the utmost assistance from observations thereon by text writers. Early runners in the field were books by Lawrence Collins (reviewed [1984] 2 LMCLQ 320) and Trevor Hartley (reviewed [1984] 3 LMCLQ 511), each of which provided authoritative, scholarly and practical guidance. Then came Professor Anton’s masterly exposition. More recently, Peter Kaye has produced a monumental work of almost 2,000 pages, which, probably because of its daunting size, still awaits perusal by this reviewer.
These contributions are now joined by the Guide provided by Professor Dashwood and Messrs Hacon and White. It is divided into four parts. Part 1 is described by the authors as “a
