Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly

BOOK REVIEW - YEARBOOK, COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION, VOL. X (1985)

YEARBOOK, COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION, Vol. X (1985). General Editor: Pieter Sanders, Kluwer Law & Taxation Publishers, Deventer (1985, xxx and 604 pp.). Paperback.
This 10th volume of the Yearbook presents a varied but comprehensive digest of decisions, articles and information in the ever burgeoning field of international arbitration. The book, as with its predecessors, provides a very useful reference work and guide to practitioners in a field in which decisions are often not reported and in which the English lawyer’s search for precedent (in the very general sense) is often difficult and invariably tedious.
The Yearbook (in accordance with the format of its predecessors) is divided into seven parts, the first of which is a report on arbitration in Yugoslavia by Professor Goldstajn of the University of Zagreb. Although perhaps of more theoretical than practical interest to most readers who are involved in arbitration work, it nevertheless exemplifies the breadth of this book and the scholarly approach with which the editors treat their subject.
Part II deals with arbitration awards and includes a section on maritime arbitration as well as commercial arbitration. It also contains reports of court decisions on arbitration from France (Cour d’Appel of Paris) and Switzerland (Tribunal Federal).
The third part of the Yearbook covers the rules of arbitration of various countries and includes the rules of the London Court of International Arbitration effective from 1 January 1985. The second section of Part III of the Yearbook contains material in connection with the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, which again provides a very useful compendium for practitioners involved in this particular area of arbitration.
