Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly

BOOK REVIEW - “REPORT ON CONTINENTAL WATERWAYS”

a contemporary study prepared by the Inland Shipping Group, Inland Waterways Association 1974, 114 Regents Park Road, London. Price £4.95.
Bearing in mind the forthcoming Continental Inland Waterways Seminar which Lloyd’s of London Press are organising in September, readers may wish to note that the above publication was issued in June, 1975, and gives a detailed analysis of the infrastructure, administration, regulation and operation of inland waterways in the various Continental countries. When one thinks of the development of LASH and similar systems of freight movement this document comes out most opportunely as it offers a unique picture of the present situation as regards freight movement by inland waterways in Europe. By contrast with the United Kingdom, inland waterway transport there has steadily developed this century, both on man-made and natural waterways. Given the low cost ratio of moving freight by water and the increasing pressures on the environment created by road transportation it is timely to consider whether before it is too late greater use should not be made of the better maintained parts of our waterway system. Certainly the impressive record of water transport on the Continent can but give us considerable food for thought in the future. This report has been painstakingly produced and can be recommended as a useful handbook both for those requiring an overall viewpoint on the subject as well as those wishing to obtain access to statistical information not otherwise easily obtainable.
