Mis-declaration in 27 per cent of incidents

UK P&I Club risk assessor David Nichol has warned data captured by the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) in the 2013-2014 period indicates that 27 per cent of incidents in terms of detected causation were attributable to cargo being mis-declared, second only to poor packaging. He said: “All dangerous goods must be carried in accordance with the provisions of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. As around 10 per cent of all container cargoes constitute dangerous goods, virtually all container ship services fall within the scope of the Code.
