Shortly after new guidance was issued by the Department of Health on mental health observation in prison, Ian Huntley was taken from Wakefield high security prison to hospital after being found unconscious in his cell following an attempt to commit suicide. A review of the methods used to observe Ian Huntley has now been initiated. The incident raised further about procedures at Wakefield Prison, where serial killer Harold Shipman committed suicide in January 2004.
