Lloyd's Shipping & Trade Law
Admiralty procedure reform in India
India has enacted a new law, the Admiralty (Jurisdiction, and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Act 2017, replacing laws more than 150 years old. It deals with admiralty jurisdiction, the arrest of ships and other connected proceedings in Indian courts.1
This legislation has assumed considerable significance in the field of admiralty and maritime law in view of the growing volume
of international trade through the sea routes in India. Also, most of the admiralty and maritime disputes in India are international
in nature.
