9.1.1 Constitutional structure

France is a republic and is currently governed by the Constitution of the Fifth Republic, which was enacted on 4 October 1958 and is based on the accountability of the government to the Parliament, made up of two chambers with a strong parliamentary system, and the accountability of the President of the Republic to the people.
