USA GYMNASTICS OFFERS TO PAY ABUSE VICTIMS $215M THROUGH INSURERS
USA Gymnastics, the national governing body for the sport, has offered to pay $215m to more than 500 athletes who said they were sexually abused by disgraced former national team doctor Lawrence Nassar. The group’s offer was part of a reorganisation plan that is being overseen by a federal bankruptcy court for the Southern District of Indiana. Under the offer, each of Nasser’s accusers would receive $250,000 to $300,000 from USA Gymnastics’ liability policies, its only remaining assets. Previously, Nasser’s victims at Michigan State University, where he worked for around 20 years, received an average payout of $1.25m. John Manly, an attorney for around 200 gymnasts, said the USA Gymnastics offer is “not just unworkable, it is unconscionable.”
