Captain jailed

Indonesia’s Supreme Court has reportedly sentenced the captain of the cargo ship Ever Judger, Zhang Deyi, to 10 years in prison. On 31 March 2018 the vessel damaged a pipeline which caused an oil spill and fire that claimed five local fishermen’s lives, as well as causing environmental damage. The authorities found the captain guilty of violating Law No 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management. He was also fined about US$950,000. The incident was believed to be the worst environmental disaster in Indonesia in a decade.
