Greece fined
For the first time, an EU member state has been fined for failing to comply with an earlier ruling of the European Court of
Justice. Greece is required to pay £12,000 each day until discharge of toxic waste into a river in the popular holiday region
of Chania in Crete is halted. The case was commenced in 1987 following complaints of dumping of waste from military bases,
hospitals and industry into the river a mere 200 yards from the sea.
