‘Doing their best’ not enough

Ombudsman Michael Buckley says government agencies must expect to pay more compensation – and more frequently – for maladministration. Increased administrative complexity along with staff cuts are likely to lead to more errors, but the argument that they were ‘doing their best’ in the circumstances should not be available to them. ‘Fairness requires that their consequences must be redressed,’ he said.
