AON FILES FOR EARLY US COURT DECISION ON WTW MERGER

Aon has pushed back at the US Department of Justice (DoJ) with a counter-motion against the government's lawsuit blocking Aon’s $30bn merger with Willis Towers Watson. The broker has filed a request asking the District Court of the District of Columbia to set a date of August 23 or soon after, so the court can issue a ruling on the acquisition. Aon said it wants to have its day in court before the outside date of September 9, the deadline for the transaction laid down in the Aon-Willis Towers Watson March 2020 business combination agreement. The motion stated: “Unfortunately, plaintiff has proposed that trial not commence until February 28, 2022 – six months after the outside date and almost two years after the transaction was announced and plaintiff’s investigation began. That is untenable to defendants. The possibility that a $30bn transaction might fail due to unnecessary delays on the part of plaintiff should be unacceptable to all.”
