5.1 Introduction
Seaworthiness is an ancient concept which is relevant for a number of aspects of maritime law, including charterparties, bills of lading and marine insurance. Breach by a shipowner of its obligations to provide a seaworthy vessel can have significant consequences, including potential liability to both charterers and cargo owners and the loss of insurance coverage.
