HURRICANE AGATHA MAKES LANDFALL IN MEXICO
Tropical Storm Agatha developed into the first hurricane of the 2022 eastern Pacific hurricane season over the weekend, becoming the earliest category two storm on record to make landfall in Mexico. Agatha made landfall just west of Puerto Angel with sustained winds of 105 mph, prompting hurricane or tropical storm warnings for the entire coast of Oaxaca and much of the coast of Chiapas state. The US National Hurricane Center said Agatha would produce rainfall amounts of up to 20 inches in Oaxaca and up to 15 inches in Chiapas, with the possibility of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides in both states. Up to six inches of rain are expected in the states of Guerrero, Veracruz and Tabasco. Hurricane conditions were expected to persist through May 31 in Oaxaca, with extremely dangerous storm surge and coastal flooding, especially to the east of Puerto Angel.
