According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, global spending on research and development (R&D) has recently reached a
record high of almost US$1.7 trillion, with many countries setting national targets for R&D spending as a share of their gross
domestic product. As a result of these massive investments, important innovations have been made in a wide variety of industrial
sectors, including renewable energy, medicine – as we recently witnessed with the Covid-19 vaccines, artificial intelligence,
metaverse, space transportation etc.
