I Introduction
After modernising the Chinese law governing domestic carriage of goods by waterways,3 China has shifted its focus to the law on international carriage of goods by sea. While the law on the domestic carriage is now governed by the Chinese Civil Code 2020,4 the international carriage of goods by sea remains be governed by the Maritime Code of the PRC5 (hereinafter “the Chinese Maritime Code”, “Maritime Code”, “the Code”, or CMC) of 1992.6
