I Introduction
On 23 June 2016 the people of the United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the EU. The immediate reaction of many in the maritime sector was “How will this affect shipping law?” which leads to the further question of “What is EU maritime law?” This chapter will endeavour to answer both those questions. The initial reaction on social media of some in China's maritime circles was that the UK would be finished as a maritime law centre. As this chapter will demonstrate, nothing could be further from the truth. This chapter will examine the nature of EU maritime law, identifying its increasing regulatory reach in the last two decades and the potential conflicts that has had with international law. It will then consider the Brexit process and show what, if anything, changed on the UK's leaving the EU on 31 January 2020 and what changed and is likely to change following the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020.
