Tyre threat

With the dumping of tyres in landfill sites becoming illegal in January, the Environment Agency has warned of up to 13mn tyres already stockpiled unsuitably in fields and quarries, and the risk of fire and pollution. Implementation of a European Directive will require that the 50mn tyres discarded each year be recycled, including a duty on tyre fitters to check that salvage firms are disposing of tyres legally.
