Solutions for procuring net zero carbon construction

A panel at the Centre of Construction Law and Dispute Resolution´s 35th Anniversary Conference dealt with the net zero carbon challenges faced by the construction industry. Speakers from industry, private practice, and the public sector, as well as various jurisdictions, reflected on topics spanning legislative measures to good procurement practices. Our paper looks at solutions that can and should be immediately applied in adopting a holistic approach – from the procurement strategy to the procurement process, through to the contractual model and the management of the contract. These recommended solutions were developed identified in a King's College research paper, ‘Procuring Net Zero Construction’, that was published in March 2022 by the Society of Construction Law.1 That KCL paper on Net Zero Construction has been picked up by the UK Government and mentioned in its updated Construction Playbook,2 and in its Guidance on ‘Promoting Net Zero Carbon and Sustainability in Construction’.3
