Seafarers facing unprecedented series of stresses

Captain Pradeep Chawla, of MarinePALS, explains how new training methods can enhance the safety of both seafarers and vessels

Shipping is experiencing a time of considerable change, whether through digitalisation or decarbonisation. Each of these individually would be a challenge but, taken together, they represent a shift in our industry that will put considerable stress onto our seafarers. The expectation is that they will adapt to new systems and new circumstances, but that will not happen without training which will require financial time and resources. It has been estimated that 800,000 seafarers will need to be trained in the use of alternative fuels alone in the coming years.
