Responses to White Paper on public health

The TUC welcomed the restrictions on smoking in workplaces, announced in the Government’s Public Health White Paper. However, Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary, said: “The Government’s plans are a major advance but they simply do not go far enough. Banishing smoke from pubs, bars and restaurants serving prepared food is of course welcome, but the proposals will do nothing to protect the health of workers in the pubs and bars where smoking is to continue. Many pub and bar owners will just find ways of getting round the law.”
