United Arab Emirates: a US nuclear powered submarine collided with a Japanese tanker near the Straits of Hormuz. The USS Newport News did not sustain substantial damage, and there were no injuries to crew. There were no oil spills from crude oil tanker Mogamigawa (160229 gt, built 2001), and no injuries, a company official said. The tanker docked in the United Arab Emirates to check the damage. The tanker, with a crew of eight Japanese and 16 Filipinos, was en route to Singapore from the Persian Gulf carrying a load of oil. The bow of the submarine collided with the stern of the oil tanker just outside the busy shipping lanes of the Straits of Hormuz. Mogamigawa is operated by Kawasaki Kisen Ltd. The submarine is under the command of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquartered in Bahrain.
