Caveat against arrest of ships in Nigeria

The practice of filing caveats against arrest of ships developed in Nigeria as a result of the undue disruption of maritime commerce and the losses and expenses which usually attends the arrest of a vessel. Prior to August 1993, when the Admiralty Jurisdiction Procedure Rules (AJPR) 1 were made, the practice of filing caveats was virtually unknown to Nigerian law.
