1. Introduction: unmanned, automated, autonomous – what’s in a name?

Unmanned and/or autonomous vessels are currently a hot topic in the maritime industry. From the publications on this topic, it would appear that “unmanned” and “autonomous” are, to a certain extent, conceived as semi-synonymous, which is however not necessarily the case. It is necessary, therefore, to define what is meant by autonomous vessels for the purposes of this chapter.
