I Introduction

Smart legal contracts are legally binding agreements where at least some of the performance is automated, so that it is entirely outside the control of the parties to the agreement. New technology has taken them from a theoretical curiosity to an essential and ubiquitous part of the rapidly developing crypto financial system. Meanwhile, legal systems are struggling to incorporate them into existing doctrines of contract law.
