During the 1990s the legal framework of the Lloyd’s market was tested almost to destruction in the English courts as severe losses led to heavy cash calls on members (at that time all individual members) which many were unable or unwilling to meet. Some of the many resulting cases of more general application are discussed in this chapter.1
