The bill of lading as a contract
5.1 Contract of carriage – general
Goods are carried on the basis of a contract of carriage between the carrier and the shipper. A bill of lading is issued after the goods are delivered by the shipper to the carrier at the port of loading. By this document the carrier confirms that the goods have been delivered for carriage and assumes the obligation to deliver them to the consignee at the port of destination.
